Summary:
Grid codes have shifted the responsibility of ensuring stability from the grid to the generators. To do so, tough Fault Ride Through (FRT) capability requirements have been imposed worldwide, which are difficult to fulfill for current generating technology. An ultracapacitor based Excitation Booster (EB) has been developed to assist synchronous generators to ride over faults. Controls based in local and remote signals from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are proposed and experimentally tested.
